How to Improve Search Engine Ranking

Showing up on search engines is one of the most critical ways to increase website traffic and expose your content, product or service to people who might be interested in what you have to offer. Most of the major search engines utilize an algorithm to determine where a website ranks. The search engines have set up specific criteria that a website must meet to get to the top of the list. The criteria are different for every engine, but all engines share several commonalities. It all boils down to the type and amount of content provided on a given website, the level of optimization done on the site, and the popularity of the website (link popularity/PageRank). Tailoring your website for improved search engine rankings is also known widely as search engine optimization, or SEO.

1. Research the keywords.
Decide what search queries you want to show up for. Do some research on how many people are actually searching for your site. Many times it is best to consult a "natural search engine optimization" professional during this process. There are several tools available from Google, Overture, and third party software developers that can make the keyword research process easier.

2. Target niche keywords with low competition.
Try to use Google Adwords to check how competitive before deciding on it. Be sure that the keywords has enough searches. Try using broad key words too.

3. Think outside of the box.
Don't just focus on your main keywords. The first thing to realize when targeting keywords is that it is not all about ranking for the most popular keyword. The most successful search engine marketing and optimization campaigns target the most relevant keywords. For example, if you are a realtor in a particular area, don’t just optimize your site for “real estate." Optimize your site for dentist, florist, movie theaters, etc. You would be amazed how many unique visitors will come through to your site when "outside of the box" thinking occurs.

4. Focus on the end user.
If you spend too much time trying to please the Search Engine Spiders, you may forget about the end user. Think about what your target market needs to accomplish their goals, and then put it on your site so that they can find it. The phrase "content is king" was born about 6 years ago, and it still holds true today. If you want to be relevant for specific keywords, than you need superior or at least highly competitive content. Write about 225-300 words of copy for each keyword and plant it on your site each day. Grow, grow, and grow. On average, one can target between 3-5 like keyword phrases per page. Make it as natural as possible and the Search Engines will reward you with a first-page ranking.

5. Make sure that all the pages of the site have custom titles and descriptions.
If your site is using the same tags for all the pages, you are not helping search engines figure out the subject or relevance of your individual pages. Regarding Meta Tags, there are 2 very important fields :

  • Title Tag - arguably the most important SEO tag for any website. Google supports approx. 60 characters in the title, while Yahoo allows for up to 110 characters in the title. It is important to target the most critical keywords in the Title. Every page should have a unique Title.
  • META Description Tag - These were once important but are no longer. Some engines do display the description defined, while others do not. Some search engines do read the description tag, and do utilize the content found within in the ranking process. Google, MSN and Yahoo give very little weight to no weight for these.
6. To make sure that you have not missed any tags or damaged any links in the process, use an inspection tool to look over your website. In the process of inspection, you will also automatically be provided with a sitemap (refer to step 7 for significance).

7. Keep the structure, navigation and URL structure of your site simple enough for search engines to follow. Remember that search engines cannot parse your navigation if it's using flash or javascript. So try to stay close to standard HTML when it comes to Navigation. URLs with dynamic parameters (?, &, SIDs) usually do not perform when it comes to search engine rankings.

8. Create a site map that tells people where everything is on your site. You will get about a 1% click through rate to your site map. However, it will do wonders for those who know what site maps do, and the Search Engines will like it as well.

9. Build up your popularity.
So now you have determined the right keywords on the right pages, you've created all of the necessary content, and you've optimized all of the content to the best of your capabilities. Congratulations - you're now in the top 80th percentile (from an optimization standpoint) of the websites listed for the keywords you're trying to target. So how do you get a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd page listing? The answer is quite simple: You have to be the most popular, too. That's right, it's a popularity contest. In other words, how many other websites know you (link to you), and how popular are they? This is typically referred to as link popularity, or called PageRank by Google.
  • The more sites that link to your site the better, and the more popular the site linking to you the more value you will receive for your link popularity. The best types of "link building" are directory registration, text link advertising, and press release distribution. Try to offer valuable information or tools so that other people are motivated to link to your site. Well-linked sites (that don't use spamming) do better in search engines.

10. Build up good quality content.
This will draw regular visitors to your website.

Tips :
  • Search engine algorithms assess the relevance of your page to any particular keyword by the content on your pages. For instance if you are selling "widgety widgets" on your site and you do not mention "widgety widgets" on your page text, search engines have very little to work with. Also make sure that you are not spamming search engines by using the same keyword over and over.
  • Correct broken links, search engines do not like dead ends.
  • It really comes down to just using common sense. Just sit down and think, "What would other people search to find this? What would I search for to find this?" Try phrases in your keyword research tool to get new ideas and find the higher trafficked most targeted phrases. DO NOT look at the numbers spat back out at you by these programs as accurate numbers, they rarely are. You can still use these tools to get ideas on new keywords, search patterns of users, and many other things, that mixed with the information of trends in that area, can really help you.
  • One of the key things you can do for your ranking in search engines is traffic. Any type of traffic will work and can not be effected by the algorithms because to block any traffic in an algorithm could effect the search engines own product as in the case of Google and their pay per click advertising. Most Algorithms do use the bounce rate of your traffic as a way of blocking traffic exchange traffic which is nearly 100% bounce traffic. If your only advertising comes from traffic exchanges then you are doing more damage than good.
  • One soulution to this is to use a service like Just10Time or Ad Cyclones Traffic which provide 100% bounce free traffic to your site which could reduce the effects and even change your bounce ratio of your website to a point that your Traffic Exchange traffic actually starts helping your ranking.
  • Interior links within your site will improve SEO; Sitemaps are a great way to generate internal links and make your website better too!
  • The most important thing to remember is the purpose of nearly all online advertising is to get your website to the top 3 pages of the search engines so that when someone is looking for what you sell or offer your page shows up. This free advertising in the most powerful in the world, but it can't be purchased it must be earned. People pay billions of dollars a year to companies like Google for tiny little ads that do not give enough information to even attract the right kind of client. The reason that it works though is because the ads are so small. A tiny ad that grabs someone attention will also cause them to click on things in the site looking for what they thought the ad was saying. That is valuable traffic that then increases the ranking in the search engine because it does not take a lot of real traffic to get your page to the first 3 pages of the search engines. While some sites get tons of traffic every month most don't so it is pretty easy to knock most sites out of the top and get your site seen.
  • Bold and italics can make your keywords stand out more with the search engines.
  • Although not as important as they used to be, reciprocal links do still matter with Google. Reciprocate with similar websites and include keywords near the links on your site.
  • Now when digging deeper to understand the traffic patterns of certain keywords use Wordtracker’s GTrends Tool. You can get an idea on the amount of competition on Google compared to the amount of searches. Now these numbers are far from accurate, But, if you can kind of step back and take a broader look at things, don’t worry so much about the numbers but compare the trends since it shows the past history. See if its steady traffic, traffic that is going extinct, or traffic just starting to peak. By using this tool, you can many times find some golden opportunities.
  • If you want to optimize well for your city, state etc., make sure to sprinkle geographic search terms throughout. Include it in text as well as set apart. Search engines do not know where you are unless you tell them.
  • If you have over 30 keywords that mean business to you, then you might want to hire a Professional Search Engine Copywriting firm or outsource it to freelancers.
  • Anyone who can go to Google and type in "keyword research" will find very many tools that mixed with common sense should suffice quite well.
Warnings :
  • Never have hyperlinks like "click here", hyperlinks should always be keywords, long hyperlinks with multiple keywords are even better.
  • Never participate on any kind of link exchange with other sites which may lead to a ban from search engines
  • Remember that if you use black-hat SEO techniques, you run the risk of getting penalized by the search engines and having your web site permanently removed from their index.
  • If you are going to use freelancers, beware of duplicate content. Always make sure to check the content that you get by searching for the content on Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
  • Don't hide content.
  • Don't create duplicate websites.

How To Increase Blog Traffic In 11 Important Things

Traffic is one of the most important parameters for your blog. Most people create a blog in order to be read by others. The more people who find your blog, the people who will read your ideas. This article is about how to increase blog traffic.

1. Create Great Content
Interesting content that can't be found anywhere else is what will keep readers coming back to your site once they get there. If your content isn't unique or compelling, no one will want to visit your blog. Work on writing posts that offer your readers something informative, interesting, or fun that they can't find on other sites.

2. Choose a catchy and descriptive title.
The title of your blog is one of the first things that readers will see and one of the factors that search engines use to determine what your blog is about. The title of your blog should let readers know right away what your blog is about. It should be easy to remember, not too long, and not too similar to another website's name.

3. Make your site easy to use.
Good design won't save bad content, but bad design can keep readers from looking at your site. Make sure your blog is easy to read and that your most important features are easy to find. Recruit a few friends to check out the site and tell you if they have any problems getting around and reading your posts. Depending on what platform you're using, you may have limited control over the design of your blog, but take the time to learn how to customize what you can and make your site as user friendly as possible.

4. Publicize your site.
Tell all your friends that you have a new blog. Ask them to check it out and recommend it to their friends. You can do this by talking directly to your friends, sending instant messages or by putting a link to your blog in your webforum signature.

5. Ask for link exchanges.
Seek out blogs and websites that cover the same material you do in your blog and ask if they would like to exchange links. If they accept, they will put links to your blog on their sites and you will put links to their sites on yours. You can also exchange links with friends, but keep in mind that their websites may not have the same focus as your blog and their readers may not be interested in what you're writing about.

6. Guest post on other blogs.
Most bloggers love getting guest posts from talented writers. Guest posts can help to publicize their blogs and give them a little time off from their own writing. Check blogs with subject matter similar to yours and see if they accept guest posts. Make sure to include a link back to your blog in the post so that readers can find the rest of your work. You'll also want to make a post on your blog directing readers to your guest post. This will allow your regular readers to check out what you've written for the other site and increase traffic on your guest post, making the other site more likely to want you to write for them again.

7. Join blog aggregators.
Make sure that they are informed when you update your blog, whether you do it automatically or manually.

8 Optimize your blog ranking in search engine queries.
Try to get your blog listed on the first page or two for search terms relevant to your content. If your site has a high rank, people can more easily find your blog.

9. Submit your blog site in social bookmarking sites.
Social bookmarking sites list websites and blogs that have been submitted to them. If you have friends or regular readers using these social bookmarking sites, asks them to like or bookmark your blog. This will help your blog to become visible to more people.

10. Blogwalk.
Blogwalking is visiting other blogs using a lost of blogs you enjoy, following links from one blog to the next, or a combination of the two. Many blogs allow their readers to include a website when they comment. So if you leave comments on the articles you read, you will create more links to your site.

11. Post on hot or popular topics.
If there are events or news that people are talking about, try to write about them in your blog. Some bloggers specifically choose controversial topics to attract attention. This may have some unintended consequences both to the popularity of your blog and your SEO techniques.

Tips

Be aware of your "competitors."
Knowing what other blogs about similar subjects have to offer will help you to figure out what will make your blog unique.

Target your "advertising."
Try to promote your blog in places around the internet where people who would be interested in your blog are likely to be. If you write a post you think a friend of yours would particularly enjoy, let him or her know about it. You can even adapt you signature for different forums. If you blog about gardening and post on a forum about roses, put a link in your signature to a category or tag with all of your rose-related articles or a link to your best article about roses.

Though not all bloggers choose to do it, buying your own domain name can make your blog easier to find and help to give it a more professional look. "Sitename.com" is easier to remember than "sitename.hostname.com," so a shorter url could help you to get more traffic.

Try to update regularly. If your readers know they can expect new content, they'll visit your blog more frequently. If you can post once a day, great! If not, try for at least once a week.
Pick a topic to write about that really interests you. It can take a long time for a blog to develop strong regular traffic, so you'll want to pick a subject that you'll be happy to write about even when you aren't getting a lot of feedback. While selecting a popular search term as the basis for your blog can get you a lot of hits initially, traffic will quickly drop off if you don't know your subject and you'll be stuck with a blog with little to no traffic that you aren't interested in writing.

Don't!

Don't spam.
Let people who you think might like your blog know it's out there, but don't constantly bug them to check out your site. If you're asked to stop promoting your site to a particular person or website, stop.

Respect other websites.
People get very annoyed when it's clear that someone is using their website solely to promote a different site. If you're going to blogwalk, make thoughtful comments on articles you found interesting. If you're posting in forums, read the rules and participate in discussions. Don't post just to get another link to your blog out there.

Be very careful about what information you share.
If you discuss your personal life in your blog,  Your blog should not include information that could lead to a reader contacting you in person. If you're going to discuss your family and friends on your blog, consider using pseudonyms so that you don't accidentally embarrass anyone.

Never steal content.
What you put on your blog should be your own work. If you use anything that isn't yours, such as a picture of short quote, provide proper credit and ask for permission where appropriate. Stealing content is one of the fastest ways to discredit yourself and lose readers.

How Google Search Does Really Work

Well, there are some general steps that Google takes in order to produce search results. First of all Google does something called Crawling, then Indexing and finally it does something called Ranking and serving the most relevant pages to the users. Crawling might seem simple, however it is one of the most difficult processes. First of all, Google will look for the pages that have better rankings and that have trustworthy sites linked to it. That way Google is able to know that pages that rank best are really the best pages. After that Google will index the most relevant pages and finally release them as the most trustworthy pages.

Years ago this whole process could take as much as 40 days to happen, from step one to step 3, however now Google is able to do very good crawling every single day. Now indexing is all about comparing documents that have the words you are looking for and giving the user web pages that are most likely to be the ones the user is truly looking for. Before Google actually delivers the user the page that has what he or she is looking for, Google will rank it based on several different parameters. Google will give preference to web pages that already have a much better reputation online and that is most likely to give the best content to the user.

This whole process of crawling indexing and delivering the user the most relevant information happen millions of times every single day all over the world. This happens whenever a person types anything on Google. In seconds the person will receive the most relevant results. Even though it might seem like an easy and simple process it is certainly not. Day by day Google is improving this useful tool to deliver users the best information as possible.
